In Zimbabwe we have a wealth of places to visit, from the majestic Victoria Falls, to the Pine Forests of Nyanga and the flowing waters of the Zambezi; but you don’t always have to pack up a car for a few days. Within 50km of Harare there are an abundance of game parks, activities and day trips which will suit families, young couples and tourists. Here we show you 5 of the best – so pack a picnic basket and enjoy a day out!
Kuimba Shiri Bird Park
Kuimba Shiri is located on the banks of Lake Chivero, a National Park which boasts over 460 species of wild indigenous birds. An ideal family venue, the bird park offers accommodation to those wishing to spend the night, in either chalets or comfortable camp sites. Day trippers can also feast on some delicious food at the Admiral’s Cabin Restaurant. Kuimba Shiri was founded by the owner Gary Stafford and is home to many orphaned, injured and abandoned birds. Birds are also rehabilitated in the Park and where possible are released back into their natural habitat. The birds of prey are flown daily at 4pm, an interactive exciting event for all the family.
Thetford Game Reserve
Located between the Nande and Dikitira hills, only 30 km from Harare, Thetford Game Reserve covers some 3,300 hectares of stunning and varied countryside, with spectacular views over Lake Mazowe. A haven to over 150 birds, the Game Reserve is also home to over 900 individual resident animals, including zebra, impala, blesbok, roan, tsessebe, buffalo, giraffe, duiker and the majestic sable. Activities include a Game Drive, a walk through the bush with a Professional Guide, walking trails (including bushman trails) and school trips upon request.
